Cheltenham Festival suffers fresh blow after Gold Cup sponsor Magners drops out

Cheltenham Festival suffers fresh financial blow after Gold Cup sponsor Magners drops out just 36 days before prestigious raceBy Marcus Townend for the Daily Mail Published: 17:41 EST, 11 February 2021 | Updated: 17:41 EST, 11 February 2021 Cheltenham has been hit with another financial body blow after sponsors Magners pulled out of backing next month’s Cheltenham Festival and sponsoring the centrepiece Gold Cup.The announcement came just 36 days before the race.A Jockey Club spokesman said: ‘The brand will no longer be promoted at the Festival.’ Magners pulled out of backing the Cheltenham Festival and sponsoring the Gold CupMagners did not respond to a request for comment but staging the 2020 meeting against a backdrop of the developing Covid-19 pandemic attracted negative publicity.Racemail revealed in November that Magners would not take up their option to sponsor the 2022 Gold Cup but on Thursday came the even earlier severing of the sponsorship as Jockey Club Racecourses announced the Cheltenham-based charity WellChild would have their name alongside the blue riband event at the four-day Festival. The organisation is a national charity which helps sick children and their families. It is a magnanimous gesture by Cheltenham’s owners, who hope to build brand awareness for a charity which has lost 60 per cent of its income during the pandemic. With no replacement backer yet announced for the Derby at Epsom after Investec pulled out last year, two of Britain’s biggest three races — the exception being the Randox Grand National — are without a sponsor, a headache for Jockey Club Racecourses, which faced a £90million loss in revenue last year.Meanwhile, Newbury will reschedule Saturday’s Denman Chase meeting for a week on Sunday if it fails this morning’s inspection.

Grand National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell died after taking ‘cocktail of drugs’

Grand National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell died after taking ‘cocktail of drugs’… and inquest hears he had suffered from depression after concussion from fall four years earlierLiam Treadwell, 34, was found dead at his Shropshire home last JuneTreadwell rode 100-1 shot Mon Mome to win the 2009 National at AintreeHe had suffered from depression after concussion from a fall four years earlierCoroner John Ellery recorded a verdict of death by misadventure on Wednesday By Marcus Townend for the Daily Mail Published: 17:58 EST, 10 February 2021 | Updated: 19:10 EST, 10 February 2021 Grand National winning jockey Liam Treadwell died after taking a cocktail of drugs predominantly made up of ‘bute’ — a medication given to horses to treat pain and alleviate fever.Shrewsbury Coroner’s court was on Wednesday told that ‘multi-drug toxicity’ was the cause of his death on June 23 last year. But senior coroner John Ellery said there was no evidence the 34-year-old intended to kill himself as he recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.  Jockey Liam Treadwell died aged 34 after taking a cocktail of drugs, an inquest heard The court heard that Treadwell, who had been struggling with Covid-19 lockdown and the breakdown of a relationship, had spoken to Injured Jockeys Fund almoner Marie King and also had a takeaway meal with a colleague from the stable of Shropshire trainer Alastair Ralph on the night he took the cocktail of drugs. He later sent a text to his ex-girlfriend which read: ‘Taken a knock-me-out cocktail tonight, it will either end it for good or just shut me down for seven hours — I don’t mind either way.’She alerted Ralph and his partner Kate Maxwell, who went to check on Treadwell. They left just before midnight telling him he could call them night or day, with Maxwell saying in a statement that Treadwell seemed lucid and keen for them to leave.Treadwell was found dead in his home the next morning after failing to report for work. Ellery said: ‘I have to reach a conclusion on whether I think Liam’s death was deliberate. For suicide there has to be evidence of two things, the act which led to death and evidence of intent.   Treadwell won the world’s greatest steeplechase at Aintree on the 100-1 outsider in 2009’There was evidence of the act because Liam took the bute at a toxic level. Do I consider that he intended to kill himself? No, I do not.’The court had earlier heard of the pride of Treadwell’s family in his achievements which saw him win the 2009 Grand National on Mon Mome. But behind his success he had history of anxiety and depression.A turning point came when a fall at Bangor left him unconscious for up three minutes in 2016. Treadwell subsequently took part in films about dealing with the after-effects of concussion.

Hollie Doyle felt ‘intimidated’ by stewards during an enquiry at Kempton when handed a six-day ban

Jockey Hollie Doyle felt ‘intimidated’ by stewards during an enquiry at Kempton when handed a six-day ban for use of the whipDoyle told an appeal hearing that she had felt ‘intimidated’ during an enquiry She was banned for her use of the whip during a race at Kempton on January 30The BHA say they continue to work with stewards on ‘process and procedure’By Marcus Townend for the Daily Mail Published: 17:30 EST, 8 February 2021 | Updated: 17:32 EST, 8 February 2021 The BHA say they continue to work with race-day stewards on ‘process and procedure’ after Hollie Doyle told an appeal hearing that she had felt ‘intimidated’ during an enquiry at Kempton last month when handed a six-day ban for use of the whip.Doyle lost her appeal with the independent panel, who were played an audio recording of the original hearing. They were satisfied she had been able to make her points.Doyle told the appeal panel: ‘I’m thick-skinned but I felt intimidated in the enquiry. I was repeatedly interrupted and spoken over. The tone in which I was spoken to backed me into a corner and left me no way to describe the incident. I would hate for a younger jockey to feel the way I did.’ Hollie Doyle told an appeal hearing that she had felt ‘intimidated’ during an enquiryA BHA spokesman said: ‘It is important that all parties involved in a stewards’ enquiry have faith in the process and feel that they are given the opportunity to state their views in an objective environment.‘Over the past two years, the BHA have developed and facilitated training for all stewards on process and procedure, and further professional development in this regard is ongoing and planned in 2021.’Meanwhile, freezing temperatures are already threatening Saturday’s meeting at Newbury, due to feature the return of Champ in the Denman Chase. Any plan to restage the meeting would depend on terrestrial TV backing.

Champion trainer Willie Mullins dominates Dublin Racing Festival by winning nine of the 15 races

Monkfish shines at Leopardstown as champion trainer Willie Mullins dominates Dublin Racing Festival by winning nine of the 15 racesMonkfish produced the stand-out performance on the second dayThe gelding is now odds-on favourite for Cheltenham’s Festival Novices’ ChaseMonkfish’s effortless victory meant Mullins took four of the six Grade One races By Marcus Townend for the Daily Mail Published: 17:39 EST, 7 February 2021 | Updated: 17:49 EST, 7 February 2021 Monkfish produced the stand-out performance on the second day of a Dublin Racing Festival dominated by trainer Willie Mullins. The imposing Paul Townend-ridden gelding is now odds-on favourite for Cheltenham’s three-mile Festival Novices’ Chase after trouncing old rival Latest Exhibition by 11 lengths in the Flogas Novice Chase.Monkfish’s effortless victory meant Mullins took four of the six Grade One races at the Festival and other wins with Appreciate it, Grangee, Kemboy and Maze Runner meant the trainer won nine of 15 races across the meeting. Monkfish’s effortless victory meant Willie Mullins took four of the six Grade One racesMullins has now collected the Flogas Novices’ Chase eight times and admitted Monkfish, winner of last year’s Albert Bartlett Novices’ Chase, deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as two of his best-known previous winners — Faugheen and Florida Pearl. He said: ‘This fella has the same sort of potential. Everything is just so effortless. I was more impressed with him today than on any other day. He seems to be getting better.’The icing on the cake for Mullins was the win of Danny Mullins-ridden Kemboy in the Irish Gold Cup as his two biggest rivals — Delta Work and Minella Indo — were let down by their jumping.Coral reacted by trimming the Cheltenham Gold Cup odds of his stablemate Al Boum Photo to 3-1 favourite as he tries to win that race for the third successive season. Kemboy, who unseated his rider in the 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup and was seventh last year, will not necessarily take him on.Mullins said: ‘He’s entered in the Stayers’ Hurdle as well as the Gold Cup, as I’m just not sure if fences are his thing around Cheltenham. We were all wondering if we should try something different.’lBookmakers were spared a massive pay-out when Gallahers Cross finished fourth in the final race at Musselburgh. The gelding, a 40-1 shot on Saturday night but sent off 4-5 favourite, had been placed in accumulator bets with Musselburgh winner Fire Away and Southwell scorer Blowing Dixie, who were the subject of similar price plunges.
